“My studio is a place of quiet contemplation, experimentation and artistic growth, as I am surrounded by nature, bluffs, trees, gardens and flowers. I am constantly inspired by the natural rhythms found in nature and my love of texture, colour and light. Initially I sought to record nature in detail, however, after becoming more aware of the Impressionists’ approach, I became excited by the possibilities of surface and effect, and leaving room for the viewer to interpret and participate.”
Most of the paintings are done en plein air on locations around Hornby Island while others are painted in the studio from original watercolour sketches painted on numerous outings around our coastal shores. The theme of water and its reflective surface can be seen throughout this body of work, with an emphasis on surface texture. The building of layers and brush strokes coupled with light playing on the uneven surface all contribute to the overall mood of the painting, giving an impression of movement, depth and meaning to her subject.
